Today, luxury hotels such as Vichy Célestins Spa Hôtel offer a variety of spa and thalassotherapy experiences. Alongside golf and tennis, pigeon shooting became a favorite spa-adjacent sport. In the years leading up to World War IIr, an estimated one-fifth of the 148,000 visitors to Vichy’s baths were foreigners, many coming from French colonies. The number of visitors to Vichy grew from 26,000 in 1872 to 108,000 in 1913, a period during which electrotherapy and mechanotherapy techniques were developed, and physical activity came to be considered as central to the spa-treatment experience. He lived in the home of Isaac Strausse, which is today an annex of the Aletti Palace Hotel, before building his Emperor Chalet along what is now the Boulevard de Etats-Unis. They boomed in popularity in the 19th century under Napoleon III, who was himself a regular patron. The thermal spas underwent successive expansions and renovations in the 17th and 18th centuries-including under Louis XVI, whose aunts visited in 1785, and Napoleon Bonaparte, whose mother was a patient in 1799. They were popularized in the 17th century by Marie de Rabutin-Chantal, marquise de Sévigné, who visited in 16 and claimed, in written letters, that the waters cured paralysis in her hands. While Vichy emerged as a spa town during the Roman Empire, the first written description of the baths dates to the 16th century.
